Visions of a UK Offshore Transmission network: Delivering Functionality and Affordability

Conference overview

This unique one-day conference focuses on the issues of delivering both functionality and affordability in a vision for the UK's offshore transmission network.  Registration is at 9.00am for a prompt 9.30am start.

Kindly hosted by ARUP at its London offices, the event is limited to only 120 attendees.  It includes a strong line-up of contributors that bring understanding, know-how and experience to the discussions.  There will be time for invaluable networking throughout the day with morning/afternoon breaks and a buffet lunch.

Nick Winser (National Grid) will introduce the topic in the UK context whilst Wilfried Breuer (TenneT) will bring to the discussions experiences in Germany.  Andrew Jamieson (Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult) will focus on the importance of costs, whilst Andre Canelhas (HVDC Technologies Limited) will provide an insight into current and future enabling technologies.  Kamran Sharifabadi (Statoil) will discuss challenges and opportunities in HVDC and a contributor from Scottish & Southern Energy will share practical views on functionality & affordability.  Espen Olsen (NEXANS) takes the meeting to a networking lunch by outlining the importance of subsea cables in transmission projects.

Following lunch from 1pm until 2pm, Catriona Sheridan (ARUP/Imperial College) will discuss the technical challenges of establishing an offshore Supergrid then James Norman (OFGEM) will frame the discussions in the regulatory environment.  Our final speaker for the day, Mark Waldron (CIGRE) will discuss how CIGRE is providing thought leadership to enable the economical delivery of offshore power.

Finally, a Panel Session chaired by Adam Middleton (CIGRE) will provide a forum for all attendees to contribute to the discussions.
