Bjarne Andersen received IEEE PES Uno Lamm Award; Dr. Willis F. Long, and Stig L. Nilsson, received the 2012 Philip Sporn Award, and Stig L. Nilsson also received the 2012 IEEE PES Nari Hingorani FACTS Award

  • Bjarne Andersen received IEEE PES Uno Lamm Award

Dr Bjarne Andersen, Andersen Power Electronic Solutions Ltd, present Chairman of CIGRE Study Committee B4, HVDC and Power Electronics and past UK Regular Member to the SC, has received the 2012 IEEE PES Uno Lamm, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Award. The Uno Lamm HVDC Award provides a means for special recognition of those outstanding engineers and scientists who have contributed to the advancement of high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology. Dr. Andersen received the Award for “his for visionary and leading contributions to improve HVDC technology through the dissemination and use of Voltage Source Converters”.  The award was presented at the 2012 Power & Energy Society Meeting in San Diego at the PES Awards dinner on 24th July 2012.

  • Dr. Willis F. Long, Secretary of CIGRE Study Committee B4 on HVDC and Power Electronics, and Stig L. Nilsson, present Secretary for SC B4 received the 2012 Philip Sporn Award

Dr. Willis F. Long, Profesor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin and pasgt Secretary of CIGRE Study Committee B4 on HVDC and Power Electronics, and Stig L. Nilsson, Principal Enginner at Exponent, Inc., present Secretary for SC B4 and past US Regular Member to the SC, received the 2012 Philip Sporn Award is given from time to time by the USNC of CIGRE to a person who has had some affiliation with CIGRÉ and who is currently actively involved with CIGRE. The Citation reads: "For cumulative career contributions to the advancement of the concept of system integration in the theory, design and/or operation of large, high voltage electric systems in the United States." The awards were presented by Mr.; Michael Heyeck, Michael Heyeck, Vice President, Transmission, American Electric Power and President, U.S. National Committee, CIGRÉ,  to the recipients at an annual meeting of the USNC in San Diego on July 23 2012.Past recipients of the award are listed at http://cigre-usnc.tamu.edu/awards/sporn/.

Stig L. Nilsson, Principal Engineer at Exponent, Inc., present Secretary for CIGRE Study Committee B4 on HVDC and Power Electronics and past US Regular Member to the SC received the 2012 IEEE PES Nari Hingorani FACTS award. The FACTS award is given to individuals who have made a major contribution to the state of the art of Flexible AC transmission System (FACTS) technologies.  The IEEE definition of FACTS is: "Alternating Current Transmission Systems incorporating power electronics-based and other static controllers to enhance controllability and power transfer capability."  Mr. Nilsson received the Award for his for his contributions to the development of the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) concept and towards the development of the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor. The award was presented at the 2012 Power & Energy Society Meeting in San Diego at the PES Awards dinner on July 24 2012.
