The Study Committees (SC) and the Technical Committee (TC) are the main players in the technical activities of CIGRE.
16 SCs exist since the reorganization which took place in 2002. More detailed scope is available in "Fields, Scopes and description of activities of Study Committees".
They are governed by precise operative rules (Terms of Reference for their sudies, nature of the publications..) and they have two basic responsibilities:
- They carry out studies on topical issues of their domain. Results are published and made available to CIGRE members, as well as to non members,
- They play a leading part in the Sessions and Symposia organized by CIGRE: definition of the topics, selection of the papers, running of the meetings. They also organize their own events: Colloquia, Tutorials, Workshops.
The activities of the SCs are coordinated by the Technical Committe (TC), lead by the TC Chairman, who represents the Administrative Council of CIGRE: it discusses the orientation of their work, validates their program of work and monitors their operation.
The SCs act as a Managing Board, made of representatives of the National Committees. They select the studies to be started, specify their contents (TORs), monitor the progress of the work and approve the publications.
To carry out its work, a SC relies on 2 types of Working Bodies:
- Advisory Groups (AGs), which advise the Chairman of the SC,
- Working Groups (WGs), which perform the studies, in accordance with the TORs which have been approved by the TC Chairman. Presently there are more than 200 active WGs (see list) in CIGRE, bringing together some 2500 International Experts.

Prepare the “ strong and smart “ power system of the future
This future power system will have to wheel over long distances bulk power from non carbon sources ; it will interconnect the local grid, to compensate for the geographical/temporal variability or lack of flexibility of these sources. It will interface local energy networks (microgrids) which allow the optimized operation of dispersed generation, intelligent loads, storage.. This future Power system will rely massively on new techniques, UHV, DC and Power Electronics, ICT...
Make the best use of the existing equipment and system
Use better the full built-in capacity, operate the system nearer to its limits; operate the assets up to the end useful life, assess their condition, maintain, refurbish, extend their life, replace...
Answer the environment concerns
Develop environment friendly materials, less intrusive techniques (cables); use efficiently the assets; reduce carbon footprint of electricity..
Develop knowledge and information
Technical expertise, cooperation of worldwide experts and access to information are keys for the success of this evolution.
