Cigré, the world forum for power systems

Words from the President

Dear all,

Welcome to the October 2013 edition of the CIGRE newsletter.

2013 Auckland Symposium:

The event was a great success, and we would like to thank all of those who were in attendance. 350 people from 35 countries attended the event in Auckland, New Zealand. The Symposium was initially arranged for SCB2 (Overhead Lines) and SCA3 (HV Equipment), but in the end there was significant involvement from SC’s A2, B1, B3, C6 and D1. We had four keynote presentations: from Mark Waldron (TC Chairman), Dr. Patrick Strange (CEO Transpower NZ Ltd.), Greg Skelton (CEO Wellington Electricity), and Konstantin Papailiou (SCB2 Chairman), giving us a snapshot of the world market and focus, the New Zealand transmission and distribution activities, concluding with an entertaining update on aesthetic overhead line structures.

2014 CIGRE Session:

The selection of papers for the Session 45 was completed on September 15, and National Committees are being currently informed.  The Central Office received 617 abstracts, compared with 561 in 2012, and 470 papers were selected, compared with 446 in 2012.

2013 Governing Body Meetings:

The CIGRE Administrative Council held its annual meeting in Kazan, Russia on 25 September. The Steering Committee met the previous day. Both meetings were hosted by the Russian National Committee who did an excellent job in organising meeting venues and translators, technical visits, and cultural events for delegates and partners.

A highlight of the Administrative Council meeting was the approval to establish a new South East European Region of CIGRE (SEERC), for the time being comprising Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.

Details on other issues discussed at the Administrative Council meeting will be provided in the November newsletter.

My best regards,
