Cigré, the world forum for power systems

Words from the Secretary General

Dear Readers,

One of the highlights of CIGRE activities in June was the publication of the second issue of the new journal “CIGRE Science & Engineering” (CSE).

Although the first issue of CSE that was published in February had collected thirteen peer-reviewed articles, this second issue only gathered seven of the same level of quality.

This is why the Steering Committee and Technical Committee that met in Tokyo beginning of May, decided to launch a campaign of call for papers towards the National Committees to spur them to encourage national authors to submit papers.

I take advantage of these lines to invite you, dear Readers, to support this initiative to make it sustainable by providing articles and by stimulating the submission of articles by colleagues or students around you.

Two other important additional points I would like to bring to the awareness of students thanks to you:

1. The free access to non-members to all the technical documents of more than 3 years ago

2. The free CIGRE membership for students.

At the end of June 2015, CIGRE had 466 student members from 26 National Committees, representing less than 6% of the total number of individual members.

This is not enough, and I encourage you to disseminate this information around you too.

In June CIGRE was active or present in three international events:

- The CIGRE symposium in Lund (Sweden) that gathered more than 320 delegates, around the theme of “Across borders – HVDC systems and Markets Integration”.

- The CIRED 2015 in Lyon (France) that gathered nearly 1300 delegates, on the theme of whole field of Electricity Distribution Systems and associated services, including Smart Grids issues.

- JICABLE’15 in Versailles (France) that gathered 800 delegates, on themes involving HVDC cables and submarine links.

The preparation of the 2016 Session is at the stage where the National Committees are providing the Central Office with the synopses they have selected. As a new online tool has just been put in place for this process, the deadline for receiving the synopses at the Central Office has been extended to mid-July. At the end of June, 280 proposals have been received.

To conclude this quick overview, I inform you that during the first semester of 2015, the Technical Committee of CIGRE has approved the creation of 25 new Working Groups (list of active Working Groups).

Enjoy your holidays.

Best regards.

Philippe ADAM

Secretary General
