Email subject:CIGRE newsletter September 2015

Cigré, the world forum for power systems

Words from the Secretary General

Dear Readers,

In July and August the different bodies of CIGRE have been very active, and the following lines give a brief overview of their activities.

Study Committees and Working Groups have been preparing ten CIGRE colloquia for September and October 2015, to be held in many parts of the world.

The Administrative Council met in August in Malaysia and took important decisions regarding the future of the Association. One of these decisions is to consult the CIGRE Members in order to modify the Statutes of the Association, to make it possible to call a General Assembly to vote by correspondence and by electronic means. This has become necessary to comply with the new French Regulations regarding the approval of the accounts of Associations like CIGRE. The consultation of the CIGRE Members will be done by calling an extraordinary general assembly before the end of this year.

The next newsletter will further develop other important decisions of the Administrative Council.

The Central Office has started the implementation of two new Information System projects:

  • The management of the synopses for the 2016 Session is made by an online tool allowing the National Committees to submit proposals and the Study Committees to make their selection. After the extended deadline of mid-July, 635 synopsis were received and are now being processed by the Study Committees.
  • The collaborative tools for Study Committees and Working Groups are in the first step of the implementation phase involving only a few pioneers working groups. The objective is to have 80 Working Groups using the collaborative areas by the end of this year.

The National Committees of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, and Malaysia have organised or hosted international conferences or meetings, to promote CIGRE activities in their respective countries.

Before closing this newsletter, I would like to invite you to attend the joint CIGRE /IEC symposium in Cape Town to be held in the last week of October. I hope it will be a milestone of CIGRE’s ambition to be more present in Africa. The National Committee of South Africa supported by the Central Office, IEC and AFSEC, has made a lot of efforts to make this event successful.

To finish, you will find the list of all the publications of CIGRE in the catalogue of CIGRE publications available from the website.

Best regards,

Philippe ADAM

Secretary General

2015 Lund Symposium

The symposium in Lund, Sweden was highly successful with 330 delegates from six continents. The theme “Across Borders – HVDC Systems and Market Integration” brought together study Committees B4, C1, C2, C4 and C5. The opening session had keynote presentations by Peder Østermark Andreasen (President-elect of ENTSO-E) and by Mikael Odenberg (President and CEO of Svenska Kraftnät) about transmission systems and markets in Europe and Sweden. This was followed by historical, manufacturing and market perspectives on the symposium theme by Sture Lindahl (Gothia Power AB), Magnus Callavik (ABB Grid Systems) and Kristin Munthe (Statnett AS). A pre-symposium tutorial and a technical tour attracted 120 and 100 persons respectively. The technical tour included the nearby HVDC converter stations of Baltic Cable and of the South West Link – an opportunity to see and compare established thyristor technology and IGBT-based VSC technology.
