Cigré, the world forum for power systems

Words from the Secretary General

Dear readers,

The last two months have been busy for our Association, and I would like to highlight some important achievements.

An Extraordinary General Assembly has been organized upon the recommendation of the Administrative Council. Its purpose is to modify the Statutes of the Association in order to allow the future General Assemblies to vote by correspondence and electronically when necessary.

This Extraordinary General Assembly will take place on 14th December, and was called by email in September, three months in advance in accordance with the Statutes. Members have the possibility, and are strongly recommended, to give a proxy for this Extraordinary General Assembly.

The 3rd issue of CIGRE Science & Engineering was published last month. This new CIGRE journal was launched in February of this year and is available, free of charge, from the website and e-CIGRE.

The preparation of the 2016 Session in Paris has reached an important step with the collection of 640 abstracts proposed by the National Committees, of which 560 have been selected by the Study Committee Chairs. The notifications to the National Committees and to the authors will be sent by the Central Office in the beginning of November. The full papers are expected before 15th February 2016.

The registrations system for the next Session has been revised: the application for registration will be online only without pre-registration. There will be no registration at the Palais des Congres. Two early bird fees will be applicable based on the date of effective payment of the registration fee.

Information on national power systems is now available on the CIGRE website, through presentations provided by more than 30 National Committees (generation mix, transmission and distribution networks, electricity market organisation, cooperation between operators and with neighbour power systems…). All the National Committees have been invited to contribute to this CIGRE initiative, with the objective of updating their data every Session year.

The new status of Student member has been successfully implemented by more than 30 National Committees. Student membership is free and gives access to all CIGRE documents available in electronic format. At the end of October, the total number of Student members is larger than 1000 and should exceed 1200 before the end of the year.

I wish to conclude this editorial by informing you that the Cape Town joint CIGRE and IEC symposium which took place from 26th to 30th October, on the theme of the development of electricity infrastructures in sub-Saharan Africa, was very successful with 95 papers and 400 registered delegates.

Best regards,

Philippe ADAM

CIGRE Secretary General

CIGRE Women In Engineering Forum

Following the  ‘CIGRE Women In Engineering Forum’ which was held in Paris as part of the 2014 session, I am very pleased that some of our national committees have taken the initiative further by establishing working bodies and organising events.

In China a women in engineering event was held in conjunction with the SC B5 colloquium. The event was successful in bringing together inspirational stories and shared experiences from successful women in the field of electric power systems, both from China and from further afield.

The UKNC has established the Women’s Network CIGRE (WNUK) under the leadership of Dr. Biljana STOJKOVSKA which will be exploring practical ways to ensure that CIGRE plays its part in encouraging and supporting women to achieve their full potential within the world of power engineering.

CIGRE is an organisation where success is directly related to technical and professional contribution regardless of aspects such as age, race or gender. We are making major advances in engaging with younger engineers. To further reinforce these advances I would encourage all CIGRE members to think about what we can do to raise the profile of women in Engineering within CIGRE. CIGRE's governing bodies are keen to support such initiatives and we welcome your proposals and ideas.
