International Colloquium on Lightning and Power Systems

 

Background and Scope

 

CIGRE Study Committee C4 on System Technical Performance is pleased to announce the organization of an “International Colloquium on Lightning and Power Systems (ICLPS)” in Delft, Netherlands.

The Colloquium is organized by the Power System Protection Centre of the Netherlands in collaboration with the C4 Dutch national committee and the Delft University of Technology, Faculty of EEMCS. The two-and-a-half-day event will include oral paper presentation followed by CIGRE WG meetings.

The Colloquium will take place at the Faculty of EEMCS of Delft University of Technology, which is located close to the historical Delft city centre.

The International Colloquium on Lightning and Power Systems has become a well-established event on the CIGRE calendar. It aims to bring together CIGRE experts and young researchers from all parts of the world, to exchange knowledge, experience and information towards a better understanding of both the phenomena associated with lightning and the implementation of protective measures to minimize its impact on electric power systems.

Engineering fraternities, such as the CIGRE Study Committee C4, play an important role in promoting research both to expand our knowledge of lightning and to identify cost-effective solutions to minimize its impact on power systems and thus the end users of electricity. This task has become more important as the power system is restructured with the introduction of mostly dispersed renewable sources, which brings with it an increased vulnerability. We firmly believe that this colloquium serves an important role in this regard and therefore encourage participants to share their knowledge and experience in lightning and lightning protection related to electric power systems.

The ICLPS 2019 especially invites young researchers to present their scientific work. The Technical Committee has therefore also appointed a young member as secretary.

 

Main Topics

 

This Colloquium was conceived as a platform for engineers and researchers to exchange knowledge and experience on the fundamentals of lightning and lightning protection of power systems. For the ICLPS 2019 we plan to focus on:

1. Lightning location, limitations and performance of existing systems;
2. Exploitation of data provided by lightning location systems (LLS), reporting and/or survey on authentic experiences, including correlation with otherwise obtained data;
3. Direct measurement of lightning currents using instrumented (tall) structures;
4. State-of-the art of LL methods and systems related to its applicability in case of power system emergency and restoration;
5. Numerical simulations and its verification as applied to lightning related studies, including lightning shielding, induced lightning, backflashover and overvoltage protection;
6. Improvement of lightning protection of overhead lines, substation equipment, underground and submarine cables and other lightning related transient phenomena;
7. Electrical grounding including towers of transmission and distribution systems;
8. PQ monitoring and lightning including measures aimed at improving PQ;
9. Elements for lightning protection, arrester application, monitoring and field experience, including multi-impulse stresses.
    

Other topics related to lightning and protection systems against lightning will also be welcome. The colloquium will start with keynote lectures, providing the audience with the latest views on the basics of lightning, so that they are better equipped to understand and follow the presentations and discussions of the colloquium.

 

Submission of abstracts

 

Participants who intend to provide written contributions are invited to submit their abstract in English (at least 400 words) before February 4, 2019 by sending their abstract to the Technical Committee chairmen.

Each abstract must indicate the topic that will be addressed (i.e.1 - 10 above or others related to lightning and protection systems against lightning), the paper title, university/company affiliation, e-mail and full address of the main author.

 

Information for the authors

 

The members of the Technical Committee will review all submitted abstracts and send an invitation for the full paper submission (or a rejection of the abstract) to the email address of the main author.

Authors should submit their abstract as a PDF file and in a layout format that is in accordance with templates provided by other well-known international conferences.

The format of the full paper as a PDF file must comply with the template that will be provided by the colloquium organizers (paper length 4 to 6 pages).

The Technical Committee will review all submitted full papers. Recommendations or modifications will be given by the reviewing team to the main author. The final paper including all modifications shall be submitted as final paper (PDF file) before the final date for paper submission. Acceptance of the final paper, as submitted, will be sent to the main authors email address.

The inclusion of the final paper into the presentation during ICLPS2019 and into the conference proceedings is subject to payment of the registration fee. A four (4) week period is given for the registration after final paper acceptance. All deadlines are sharp, as no extension of deadlines is planned. Note, only the email address of the main author will be used for correspondence. The main author is responsible of the information to his co-authors.

 

Important Dates

 

February 4^th,2019: Deadline for abstract submission. Authors will be notified of invitation for a full paper submission before February 17^th,2019.

April 8^th,2019: Deadline for full paper submission.

May 17^th,2019: Authors will be notified of the full paper acceptance and any modifications required.

June 7^th,2019: Final paper submission including all recommendations given by the reviewers.

June 28^th,2019: Final paper acceptance.

October 7^th-9^th,2019: Colloquium – Delft University of Technology, Faculty of EEMCS, Netherlands.
